💵 Canada’s $27.6 Billion Retaliatory Tariffs Take Effect
Canada’s sweeping retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods took effect at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, hitting everything from steel and aluminum to cheese and video game consoles after trade talks between Washington and Ottawa collapsed.
The tariffs cover $27.6 billion in U.S. products, matching President Trump’s 50% tariff on Canadian goods dollar-for-dollar, with rates ranging from 15% on forklifts and industrial molds to 50% on aluminum, fishing rods, golf clubs, perfume, milk and game consoles.
The move follows the collapse of talks after Trump’s August 22 decision to impose the 50% tariff; Canada said Washington’s demanded concessions “would have undermined the interest of workers, businesses, and all Canadians.”
The White House countered that Canada has been “ripping off the United States for decades.”
🚤 U.S. Forces Sink Fifth Cartel-Linked Vessel in the Pacific
U.S. Southern Command sank a suspected drug-trafficking refueling vessel linked to the Los Choneros terrorist organization in the Eastern Pacific — the fifth such vessel destroyed since Aug. 28 and the fourth in September alone.
Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere carried out the interdiction Sept. 5 based on intelligence tying the vessel to Los Choneros, an Ecuador-based cartel designated as a terrorist organization.
It’s part of an intensifying U.S. military campaign against Western Hemisphere drug-trafficking networks that has now sunk five vessels in under two weeks.
The Trump administration has increasingly relied on military strikes rather than law-enforcement seizures against suspected narco-trafficking vessels.
🏫 Treasury Moves to Strip Tax-Exempt Status From Schools Using Race in Admissions
The Treasury Department and IRS proposed new regulations that would revoke tax-exempt status from private schools and colleges that use race in admissions, scholarships or other school-run programs, potentially affecting some 18,000 schools.
The rule follows the Supreme Court’s 2023 Students for Fair Admissions decision banning most race-conscious college admissions, and would extend to K-12 schools, financial aid, athletics and other programs.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said “schools rebranding race-based preferences as equitable, inclusive, or diversity-enhancing does not change their discriminatory nature.”
Religious schools may still select students by faith, and schools can still target aid using race-neutral factors like income; the American Association of University Professors is weighing legal action.
⚖️ DHS’s Top Lawyer Fires Back After 128 Ex-Judges’ Ethics Complaint Rejected
The Florida Bar declined to investigate DHS General Counsel James Percival over a 24-page ethics complaint filed by 128 former federal and state judges objecting to his “Worst of the Worst Judges” series — and Percival is now calling the complaint itself “Bar-fare.”
The complaint, led by former Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice Peggy Quince, accused Percival of violating professional conduct rules by publicly criticizing four sitting judges he says engaged in “open defiance of the Supreme Court” and “judicial sabotage.”
The Florida Bar said it does not prosecute “sitting officers appointed under the U.S. Constitution while they are in office.”
Percival said the judges were using their institutional prestige for political ends, arguing “the left has...hid behind this veneer, this prestige” to shut down dissent, and suggested the signatories should themselves face scrutiny.

👪 New Jersey District Sued Over Hiding Student Gender Transitions From Parents
The School District of the Chathams in New Jersey is facing a lawsuit over a policy that lets students change their name and gender identity in official records without notifying parents, with a guidance counselor deciding “whether, and to what extent” families are told.
Plaintiffs — including the Thomas More Society, Moms for Liberty and two anonymous parents of elementary school girls — argue the policy violates First Amendment and due-process rights along with parental rights under Supreme Court precedent.
Thomas More Society attorney Christopher Ferrara said parents “have standing to challenge a policy like this, which would hide a gender transition,” regardless of whether a child is actually transitioning.
Moms for Liberty’s Tina Descovich said students “can be punished up to suspension just for using the wrong pronoun or the wrong name”; the district has said it isn’t bound by the Supreme Court’s Mirabelli decision.
