New data reviewed by investigators shows the Amazon Air cargo jet that crashed and burned at Miami International Airport last week never engaged its critical braking systems before overrunning the runway, killing five people.
Pilots applied full engine power in the final seconds before the plane overran the runway and struck a ground-support vehicle, killing five and injuring five others.
The NTSB has recovered the flight's voice and data recorders and is examining why the braking system failed to deploy on landing.
A full determination on whether mechanical failure, a procedural error, or something else caused the crash is expected to take months.
🏛️ Smithsonian Secretary Bunch Retires as Roberts Praises His Legacy
Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch III, 73, is stepping down after more than a year of clashes with the Trump administration over how the institution presents American history — and Chief Justice John Roberts is now praising his tenure on the way out.
Roberts, who chairs the Smithsonian's Board of Regents as its chancellor, said the institution “benefited greatly from his wisdom, vision and leadership.”
The exit follows a July White House report accusing the National Museum of American History of “institutional capture by a radical, activist ideology.”
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and domestic policy chief Vince Haley alleged the museum violated federal antidiscrimination law and fostered a hostile workplace based on race and ethnicity.
📉 Oil Rockets Past $107 as Iran War Chokes Off Supply
Brent crude jumped more than 16% to over $107 a barrel — and U.S. crude to $106.22 — as the widening Iran war disrupts a fifth of the world's oil supply that normally moves through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iraq, Kuwait, and the UAE have all cut production as tanker traffic through the strait stalls over fears of Iranian missile and drone strikes.

ICE arrested 50,925 people in August, DHS says — the third consecutive month the agency has broken its own monthly arrest record.
August's tally topped July's 50,208 and June's roughly 44,000, DHS says.
